We made it! 我們成功為203隻社區狗進行了絕育手術和瘋狗症防疫注射
2018 年4月，在香港的義工及尼泊爾當地的動物機構共同的努力下，我們在Palanchok Bagawati Temple 及Panauti成功為203隻社區狗完成了絕育手術和瘋狗症防疫注射。這包括了90隻雌性和113隻雄性的狗隻。
香港獸醫專業人士首次參加尼泊爾的TNR計劃
在沒有前車可鑑的情況下，這是第一次有香港獸醫專業團隊參與在尼泊爾的「捕捉、絕育、放回」(TNR) 計劃。因著他們與當地的獸醫專業團隊的合作和交流，為當地進行大型 TNR計劃注入了大量新的元素。除了即時應用在是次計劃當中，這些新元素亦成為日後提升手術流程的效率和質素的藍本。
歷史性地在尼泊爾引入捕狗籠
為了減低在捕捉過程對狗隻造成的壓力，我們在尼泊爾首次引入捕狗籠。香港的動物機構「動物朋友」的負責人Jessie Ng專誠飛往尼泊爾，為當地的團隊提供了使用捕狗籠的訓練。見證著當地的團隊能活學活用捕狗籠，Jessie非常感動。未來，我們會繼續在當地推廣這較為人道的捕捉方法。
工欲善其事，必先利其器
我們看來理所當然的設備，對資源不足的當地機構來說可是奢望。在整個計劃過程中，我們使用了大量獨立狗籠確保了動物在運送和在手術前後的安全。而透過我們提供的新手術工具包括手術刀、消毒儀器以及疫苗保溫箱等等，亦大大提升了手術程序的安全標準。
非獸醫背景的義工令計劃過程更人道
不少人以為只有獸醫專業的人士才適合參與我們的海外義工計劃，這是有所誤解的。香港非獸醫背景的義工們對狗隻在手術前後的照顧可說是無微不至。除了協助監察狗隻在手術後的重要維生指數包括體溫、心跳和呼吸等之外，他們也照顧狗隻的飲食和清理牠們的排泄物，令牠們在盡可能舒適和衛生的環境中等候手術和復原。我們的計劃希望做到每個細節都盡量人道，非獸醫背景的義工們的參與是不可缺少的。

We made it! We successfully neutered and vaccinated 203 community dogs
In April 2018, with the joint efforts of both Hong Kong volunteers and local animal organisations, we successfully neutered and vaccinated 203 community dogs against rabies at Palanchok Bagawati Temple and Panauti in Nepal. It included 90 female and 113 male dogs.
Hong Kong Vet Team participated in Nepal’s TNR Program for the first time
In the absence of reference from the past, it was the first time that Hong Kong veterinary professionals participated in ‘Trap-Neuter-Return’ (TNR) program in Nepal. They created history. Thanks to the collaboration and exchange between the veterinary professional teams from Hong Kong and Nepal, a large number of new elements have been developed for the running such large-scale TNR programs in Nepal. From the immediate implementation into the April program, those new elements have set a blueprint for efficient surgical procedures and high quality TNR programs in the future.
Historic Introduction of Animal Trap into Nepal
In order to reduce the stress created on the dogs during the catching process, we successfully introduced animal trap as a more humane catching method for the first time in Nepal. Jessie Ng, one of the founders of ‘Animal Friends’ in Hong Kong, flew to Nepal to provide training for the local organisation on using animal trap. She was touched by the fact that the local team could pick up and practice using the animal trap swiftly in the program. In the future, we will continue to promote this more humane catching method in Nepal.
To Do a Good job, an Artisan Needs The Best Tools
Throughout the process of the program, we used a large number of independent cages to house our animals to ensure their safety during transportation, and before and after surgery. Moreover, attributed to the new surgical tools provided by the project including surgical kits, Autoclave, vaccine storage box and so on, the safety standard for the surgical procedures has been greatly improved.
Non-veterinary Background Volunteers Made our Project Humane
Some people think that only veterinary professionals are suitable to participate in our overseas volunteer programs. This is however a misunderstanding. The care provided by our volunteers from non-veterinarian background to the dogs was meticulous. Apart from monitoring the dogs' vital signs mnemonic including body temperature, heartbeat and breathing, they also took charge of their meals and cleaned up their excrement, allowing them to wait for and recover from surgery in the most comfortable and hygienic environment as possible. Our goal has been to make every single step in the program as humane as possible, and the contribution from non-veterinary volunteers was imperative. We believe that everyone can contribute to animal welfare as long as one has got a heart for animals.
The program has achieved unprecedented success because of the participation of Hong Kong’s volunteers. They travelled a long way to help reducing the suffering of community dogs on the street. Their action has demonstrated that love to animals is borderless. The outcome they yielded has laid a strong foundation for our future’s TNR programs for community dogs in Nepal. 2017TNR PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
"66 community dogs were sterilised in 2017 TNR Program "
In January 2017, we partnered with local organisations and successfully neutered 66 community dogs in a post-earthquake camp in Chuchepati, Kathmandu. During the TNR program, we simultaneously vaccinated the dogs against rabies, a disease that still kills hundreds of people in Nepal every year.
At the same time, we treated over 30 dogs with different health issues including mange, parvovirus and road accidents. Frequently seeing dogs in Nepal suffering from road accidents is the most gut-wrenching experience for me. Jacky, a few months old puppy hit by a truck with a broken hind leg was in pain when we found him. If without treatment, he would be limping for his whole life, which would make his life as a community dog even harder, not to mention the on-going pain he would have caused by the improper alignment of the broken bones.
After one and a half years’ on-the-ground experience and liaison with local organisations, it was a small triumph for what we have achieved in 2017. But we knew that much more needed to be done. Working with local organisations to run TNR programs is more than clear our future direction.
“在2017年我們為66隻社區狗進行了絕育和瘋狗症防疫注射”
2017年1月，我們與當地動物組織合作，成功地在加德滿都Chuchepati的一個震後營地中為66隻社區狗進行了絕育手術。同一時間，我們也為牠們接種瘋狗症疫苗。 除此之外，我們治療了30多隻患有不同健康問題的社區狗，包括因毛囊蟲而引起的皮膚病、犬細小病毒和因交通事故而受傷等等。在尼泊爾，經常看到狗隻因被車撞到最教我難過。 Jacky，一隻只有幾個月大的小狗因被貨車撞到而後腿骨折。當我們找到牠時，牠痛苦地鳴叫，也不能行走。如果沒有得到治療，牠會一輩子都在跛行，這會使他作為社區狗的生涯變得更加困難，更不用說因斷骨不當地接合而導致的持續疼痛。
經過一年半在當地的前線經驗和與動物組織的聯絡，我們在2017年取得的成果可以說是一個小小的勝利。但我們知道還有更多的事情需要繼續做。與當地動物組織合作推行TNR計劃成為我們明確的未來方向。
